Lamborghini is speeding into the world of the blockchain with the release of its first NFT (non-fungible token), produced in collaboration with Swiss artist Fabian Oefner, as well as NFT Pro and Sotheby’s.

Oefner’s image depicts a Lamborghini breaking down into its core components as it rockets through the blackness of space, celebrating human space exploration.

Swiss artist Fabian Oefner created the compositions from real elements, capturing more than 1,500 individual parts of an actual car. The image of Earth’s curvature was obtained by equipping a weather balloon with a camera and sending it to the edge of the stratosphere. Oefner and his team then assembled all the images into one artificial moment in time that took more than two months to create.

The digital artworks are accessible via a QR code engraved in five units of a physical object, the Space Key, whose carbon fiber elements were sent to the International Space Station as a part of a joint research project with Lamborghini.

“For me, Space Time Memory is an analogy to the memories we make in life,” says Fabian Oefner. “Memories are rooted in the physical world; we make them in reality. We then store them in our brains, what could be considered the digital world.”

The supercar maker says the distinguishing element of the space-themed artwork is a piece of advanced carbon fibre composite material that can boast of an incredible journey: Lamborghini sent the sample to the International Space Station in 2019 as part of a joint research venture.

After returning from space, the composite became part of the Space Key. This unique object is limited to five units, each of which is linked to an exclusive digital artwork by the same artist, accessible via the QR code found on the backside.

Non-fungible token

What is a NFT (non-fungible token)? – is a non-interchangeable unit of data stored on a blockchain, a form of digital ledger. Types of NFT data units may be associated with digital files such as photos, videos, and audio. Because each token is uniquely identifiable, NFTs differ from blockchain cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin.
