Bernina Express is without doubt the prestige train of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). Thanks to the comfortable observation cars, passengers are able to enjoy uninterrupted views of the unique Alpine landscape, as the train rolls along the century-old masterpiece of pioneering engineering work that constitutes the railway. Around half a million delighted visitors come from all over the world every year to take a trip on this famous express train. The Bernina Express operates on the Albula and Bernina lines, which received, on 7th July 2008, the accolade of “The Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina landscapes”. This identifies them as belonging to the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites.

On the highest railway across the Alps, the Bernina Express climbs up to the glistening glaciers before descending to the palms of Italy far below. This rail link between Northern and Southern Europe builds bridges between regions with different languages and cultures. The railway is unique, blending ideally with the alpine landscapes around the Albula and Bernina Passes. The train negotiates the 55 tunnels, 196 bridges and inclines of up to 70 per mille with ease. At the highest point on the RhB network, 2,253 metres above sea level, you will find the Ospizio Bernina. Here, visitors can delight in the cultural and natural surroundings and enjoy the Alps at their most impressive. Thanks to the modern panoramic cars, you will enjoy unrestricted views of the unspoilt Alpine panorama.

For a touch more Italian flavour: Enjoy a comfortable trip on the Bernina Express Bus from Lugano to Tirano or vice versa. The Bernina Express Bus takes passengers on a leisurely drive through the picturesque landscape of Valtellina, past Lake Como, where many stars own holiday homes and Hollywood films are shot, to Tirano. With its Mediterranean flair, the destination steeped in culture and history invites visitors to enjoy sheer indulgent relaxation.

10 Years of RhB UNESCO World Heritage

On July 7th 2008, the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO took the decision in Quebec (Canada) to include in its list of World Heritage Sites the Albula and Bernina lines of the Rhaetian Railway. This makes the “Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina landscapes” only the third railway worldwide to be awarded this prized distinction.

The award is not only an honour but also an obligation to preserve this masterpiece of pioneer railway engineering for future generations.  During the anniversary-year various activities based on the World Heritage and railway culture will be taking place. The events are planned to interest the general public as well as the culturally interested and railway fans and experts so that everyone can be made aware of the value of railway culture.
